Alabama Drivers Rank as the 6th Worst in the Nation, According to Study

Bring up the subject of driving habits and everyone will have a different and often heated opinion. Taking an objective view of the subject can be difficult as many motorists are prone to dismissing all habits which are not their own. In fact, it is not uncommon to hear that a certain state or city has worse-than-average drivers. Statistically speaking, however, residents of Alabama may be right. A new study reported by SmartAsset.com examines data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) to find out which states have the worst drivers. Alabama drivers come in as the 6th worst in the nation.

For the purposes of this study, the key metrics which were taken into consideration include:

  1. Total number of drivers in the state
  2. DUI arrests
  3. Overall fatalities
  4. Speeding tickets
  5. Percentage of uninsured drivers

Overall, motorists in the lower half of our nation did not fare well in this study. Six of the ten states with the worst drivers are located in the southeast and southwestern United States. While Alabama scored poorly in the categories of uninsured drivers (19.6%) and traffic related fatalities (0.2 per thousand drivers), it was not all bad news for the state. According to the study, Alabama drivers have the 4th best score in the category of DUI arrests, with just under one and a half incidents per thousand drivers.

Rounding out the top 10 States with the worst drivers are:

  1. Florida
  2. Mississippi
  3. Oklahoma
  4. New Jersey
  5. Delaware
  6. Alabama
  7. Vermont
  8. Tennessee
  9. Texas
  10. Nevada
